Everyone should know our current and 44th president, Barack Obama, the first African-American to be elected to the country’s highest office. He was born August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2004, he was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat, representing Illinois. Before entering the Senate, Obama worked as a community organizer, a lawyer, a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School, and a representative in the Illinois state legislature. In 1992, he married Michelle Robinson and they have two daughters, 14-year-old Malia and 11-year-old Natasha (Sasha).
Not as many YCteen readers will know much about Obama’s Republican opponent, Mitt Romney. He was born on March 12, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. Romney grew up in a Mormon family. His father, George Romney, was the governor of Michigan for six years and unsuccessfully ran for president in 1968. Mitt Romney co-founded an investment company called Bain Capital in the 1980s, and in 2002 he was elected governor of Massachusetts. He married Ann Davis in 1969 and has five adult sons: Tagg, Matt, Josh, Ben, and Craig.
